Technology Notification – Blackboard Discussion Board Issues (03/09/17)

Technology Notification-

On March 9, a Blackboard error caused faculty to be removed from their Winter 2017 courses. While IT was able to re-assign faculty to their courses, the following Discussion Board issues remain:

  • All posts are now marked as “unread”, rather than “read”.
  • All instructor posts ( both thread starters and replies to student posts) now show as “anonymous” as the author.
  • All threads for forums that were in draft mode (not published) were deleted.

Unfortunately there is not a way for IT resolve these issues in your course(s). We have included ways to resolve these issues on your end below. We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused. Please contact IT Customer Support at ITHELP or 234-HELP with any questions and/or concerns.

To mark posts as “read” instead of “unread”:

  1. Click the forum that you want to update.
  2. To select all threads, check the checkbox in the thread heading right below the “Thread Actions” button.
  3. Click the Thread Actions button and select “Mark as Read”.

To update the tread author from ” anonymous” to instructor name

  1. Click the forum that you want to update.
  2. To select all threads, check the checkbox in the thread heading right below the “Thread Actions” button.
  3. Click the Thread Actions button and select “Change Author”.
  4. Unfortunately there doesn’t appear to be a way to update the replies by an instructor inside a thread from anonymous to the instructor names.

To see what still needs grading:

  1. Select Grade Center–>Needs Grading.
  2. Select “Discussion” from the Category drop down under the Grade All header and click the “Go” button.
  3. This will filter for just discussion items that need grading.

To restore thread for forums that were in draft mode (not published) :

  1. Open another browser window/tab.
  2. Go to https://bbtst.grcc.edu (requires campus access).
  3. Find your course section.
  4. Copy over the information in the test environment to your course in https://bb.grcc.edu.
  5. The information is a couple weeks old, but still may contain drafts that you set up previously.
